INDIANAPOLIS — Marion County will begin requiring pet owners to microchip their pets in 2025.
The new ordinance goes into effect on January 1st. Indianapolis Animal Care Services will spend a year educating pet owners about microchipping before any citations are issued.
The whole point of the ordinance is to help relieve pressure on shelters in the county so that if a pet gets lost and is found it can more easily be returned to their owner, thus freeing up more space in shelters.
Advocates also say this will help clamp down on illegal backyard breeding of animals.
Chipping your pet is an easy process and most places do it for as much as ten dollars.
