WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — After coaching the Purdue Boilermakers to just five wins in two years, Purdue University has fired head football coach Ryan Walters.
Walters’ firing comes on the heels of Purdue’s loss to Indiana in the Old Oaken Bucket Game 66-0 in Bloomington. Overall, his record will go down as 5-19 in his two years leading the Boilers.
His first year showed some promise after having taken over after the departure of Jeff Brohm following the 2022 season. After going 8-5 in Brohm’s last year, the Boilermakers went 4-8 in Walters’ first season at the helm in 2023. This season the Boilers managed just one win over Indiana State.
That was followed by 11 straight losses with an average margin of defeat of nearly 31 points.
The closest Purdue came to their second win of the season was an overtime thriller against Illinois in Week 6, but they came up short 50-49 in Champagne. Walters was previously the defensive coordinator at Illinois before being hired by Purdue.
Walters fired offensive coordinator Graham Harrell earlier this season and took over playcalling duties on offense himself and also had offensive assistant, and former Ben Davis High School head coach, Jason Simmons handle the playcalling at times since then.
