BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Firefighters in Monroe County were battling a large brush fire in a wildlife refuge just east of Bloomington Wednesday afternoon.
A post from the Monroe Fire Protection District says the fire broke out at the North Fork State Wildlife Refuge. That’s a marsh and woodland area along the northern edge of Monroe Lake that is home to multiple species of birds.
It wasn’t clear how long firefighters spent, but it had been marked under control sometime Wednesday evening.
“The fire has currently been marked under control and Indiana DNR Fire is assisting on the incident,” the district said on Facebook.
Due to drought-like conditions, 46 counties are under burn bans at the moment. Monroe County is not among them.
