INDIANAPOLIS — For the first time Indianapolis Metro Police were able to use a new city ordinance to crackdown on spinning and street takeovers over the weekend.
Law enforcement has warned people before not to engage in events where street racers do donuts on public streets and parking lots. Now police have followed through on impounding cars of people they’ve caught.
“They’re being reckless and dangerous and putting their lives (and) others’ lives at risk,” said Ofc. Tommy Thompson with IMPD on WISH-TV.
This past weekend IMPD says they caught several people spinning in areas throughout the city. A new city ordinance says police can now impound someone’s car for 30 days if they are caught.
They say they also found an assortment of illegal drugs during some of the arrests. Multiple teenagers were also among those arrested, according to police.
Thompson said police having to crack down on spinning takes officers away from places where they need to be where more serious crimes may be happening and that it can be a strain on resources.
“Join a car club and do this in a legal manner, but this is not the fashion in which to do it,” Thompson said.
