INDIANAPOLIS — Helene will bring several inches of rain and strong winds to Central Indiana on Friday. Forecasters expect rain to start today, and wind advisories and high wind warnings will be in effect throughout the day.
“We’ll start to see branches breaking off trees, a few weaker trees falling, some shingles coming off houses, and minor overall damage,” says Matt Eckhoff with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.
Helene has knocked out power for about two million customers across the Southeast, primarily in Florida, where it struck land Thursday night as a Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds, affecting approximately 1.2 million people.

Meanwhile, flooding is possible in Indiana, but with the region’s dry conditions, wind damage poses the biggest concern throughout the day.
“We’ll see wind gusts about 50-60 miles an hour today,” Eckhoff says.
A High Wind Warning begins at noon for central Indiana and may last until 1 a.m. in some areas.
Due to weather, the Circle City Classic has canceled its pep rally outside Lucas Oil Stadium, originally set for Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Indianapolis Public Schools have also postponed the 26th Annual Spirit of Freedom from Friday to October 4.
Eckhoff says there’s no chance of severe weather since there won’t be any thunderstorms, but you can expect steady rain throughout the day, which will continue into the weekend.
