Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a warning to stay-at-home violators over the weekend: “We will take you to jail, period.”

Lightfoot’s press conference on Saturday was in response to frustration and outrage from area residents that Chicago police had broken up several social gatherings over the weekend that violated the order.

“We will shut you down. We will cite you and if we need to, we will arrest you and we will take you to jail. Period,” Lightfoot said. “Don’t make us treat you like a criminal, but if you act like a criminal and you violate the law and you refuse to do what is necessary to save lives in this city during a pandemic we will take you to jail, period.”

The state’s order is a legal mandate, according to NBC Chicago 5, and police have the authority to issue citations and to arrest those who do not comply with the order.

“If you host a party, promote a party, or go to a party, we are not playing games. We mean business, and we will shut this down one way or another,” Lightfoot said. “The time for educating people into compliance is over. Don’t be stupid. We’re watching you, and we’re going to take decisive action.”

WIBC host Tony Katz:

“Now I’m not a believer in hosting house parties when your mom is a first-responder – that happened in Chicago – but Lori Lightfoot was telling people they couldn’t go out for a run and she was going out for haircuts. This ‘do as I say, not as I do’ garbage means these politicos should be thrown out. Yes, I hold them to a higher standard than the average citizen, and if they don’t like it, they can leave the post.”
