LA PORTE, Ind. — The parents of a La Porte girl with autism say a special education teacher put the 8-year-old in a homemade restraint chair in an attempt to control her classroom behavior.

Charles and Heather Castle’s federal lawsuit claims a teacher and two aides at Kingsford Heights Elementary used a restraint chair built by the teacher’s father, reports The Northwest Indiana Times.

The lawsuit also alleges that the La Porte Community School Corporation violated its own policies regarding the use of restrainting devices in the classroom.

The Castles say they were never told that their daughter was being placed in the chair but became suspicious when she started behaving differently at home and refused to wear a seatbelt.
