INDIANAPOLIS–An IMPD officer sustained a broken fibula while taking a man into custody Tuesday night.

IMPD says the incident happened around 9:30 pm at a hotel near Jackson Place and S. Illinois Street. Officers say a man was sitting in a stairwell, when the suspect named Robert Sanders Jr., approached him and yanked on the man’s beard. Another witness confirmed the incident to police.

They also say Sander’s was seen pacing back and forth yelling at the hotel. Police tried to talk to Sanders.

“They gave him loud verbal commands to place his hands behind his back, but instead, Sanders refused, yelling at the officers and calling them ‘devils’,” said IMPD in a news release.

They wrestled Sanders to the grown and several officers arrived to provide backup. It was during that altercation that the officer suffered the broken fibula. That officer was later treated at a nearby hospital.

“Yesterday, two of our officers were injured in the line of duty, one who was shot, and another while trying to take someone into custody who chose to resist arrest. These incidents are clear reminders of the risks our officers face every single day. I’m grateful both are expected to recover, and I want to thank them for their courage and commitment to protecting our city,” said Chief Bailey.

Sanders was arrested for battery, battery against a public safety official, and resisting law enforcement causing injury. He was transported to the Community Justice Campus. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decisions.
