STATEWIDE — The Fourth of July holiday weekend in Indiana is expected to be one of the busiest travel periods in recent memory.

AAA is projecting that 1.9 million Hoosiers will be traveling to celebrate Independence Day, with most of those people driving (1.7 million). Sunday is expected to be the busiest day of travel.

Last year, AAA Hoosier responded to 5,600 road assistance calls during the Fourth of July travel period. While speaking to WISH-TV, Christina Griffiths, a spokesperson for AAA, said most of their calls they receive will likely be for dead batteries and flat tires.

“Just like extreme cold can cause problems for tires and batteries, extreme heat is going to do the same thing,” she said.

AAA recommends drivers check their tire pressure and batteries before hitting the road. It also wouldn’t hurt to pack a vehicle emergency kit and include things like a portable tire inflator and jumper cables.

They are also reminding motorists to drive safe and responsibly, especially when a car is pulled off to the side of the road.

“‘Slow down, move over’ means if you see any car on the side of the road with their hazard lights on, you are required by law to slow down to several miles below the speed limit and move over a lane when safe to do so,” said Griffiths.
