Officers identified the boy as 3-year-old Jayvinvontae Keion-Ray Carter.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A man was arrested after his gun was found by a three-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself.

The Evansville Police Department says it happened Saturday. Officers arrived at a home in the 1300 block of Florence Avenue on the northwest side of Evansville after someone called them, saying their nephew shot himself.

Medical personnel took the boy to the hospital, but he did not survive.

Police identified the man as 30-year-old Jovontae Carter, and they found out he fled the scene with something on him. They say they caught him with marijuana.

Carter told officers that he threw his gun, which was used in shooting, in a creek, saying he no longer wanted to see it. Officers later found the gun in the yard of a home.

Witnesses say the boy found the gun under couch cushions, where Carter usually hid it.

Carter was taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail, and he faces charges of neglect of a dependent causing death, marijuana possession, and additional charges.
