LAFAYETTE, Ind.–Two women were honored by Indiana State Police this weekend for saving a man in a crash that happened in White County.
State Police granted Siri Sahoo and Tanna McKinley with the Lifesaving Award for their actions on October 10, 2024. Just before 8:30 pm that day, McKinley and Sahoo saw a vehicle that overturned and landed on its passenger side on I-65 southbound in White County.
Police say McKinley and Sahoo saw an overturned vehicle on its passenger side. They found an elderly man inside the vehicle and trapped on the driver’s side. First, they tried to open the driver’s side door, but couldn’t do it. They told the man to crawl to the back seat and to exit through the rear side window. Even though moved to the back, he could still could not escape the vehicle.
Eventually, McKinley and Sahoo worked together to pull the man through the rear driver’s side window. Moments after they removed him, the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.
The elderly man was not injured.
State Police gave each woman a Lifesaving Award Certificate to recognize them for “exceptional meritorious service and heroic conduct in saving the life of a fellow human being.”
