Severe storms, temperature drop expected
AUDIO: Severe Storms, Temperature Drop Expected Wednesday in Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS — A strong system is set to move through Indiana on Wednesday evening, bringing the potential for severe storms before a sharp temperature drop.
Tuesday will be the warmest day of the week, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Winds will strengthen, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph.
Wednesday starts dry and windy, with highs in the low to mid-60s before a cold front arrives. Storms are expected between 5 p.m. and midnight, with the highest risk in western Indiana. Damaging winds are the primary threat, along with a chance of large hail.
“As the storm spreads eastward, the system weakens,” said Matt Eckhoff of the National Weather Service. “Instability decreases, so the threat is lower farther east and west.”
Overnight, temperatures will fall into the 30s, with highs struggling to reach the mid-40s Thursday. A wintry mix is possible in the morning, though no accumulation is expected.
“We’re going to be up and down—it’s quite the rollercoaster of temperatures,” Eckhoff said.
Spring officially begins at 5:01 a.m. ET Thursday. Temperatures are expected to rebound by Friday, reaching the mid-50s, with another round of rain possible late Friday into the weekend.
