FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Fort Wayne Community Schools Superintendent, and other leaders in the district, oppose two proposed bills in state house that could impact funding in their district.

Superintendent Mark Daniel held a press conference Monday to voice his concerns about Senate Bill1 and Senate Bill 518.

“While these bills may have well-intended goals,” said Daniel. “They ultimately create a counter-productive situation that further strains essential community services while placing additional burden on property taxpayers.”

SB1 is Governor Mike Braun’s proposed property tax relief plan. Daniel believes that plan would result in less funding available for public school districts and other government services that people rely on in Indiana. According to Daniels, SB1 would result in a loss of nearly $2 million for his district in 2026, with more losses to follow through 2028.

SB 518 could require all Indiana public school districts to share property tax dollars with charter schools if 100 or more students within their district opt to leave for a charter school.

Daniel claims that both these bills would result in significant cuts, including transportation.

Members of the Parent Teacher Association and Indiana State Teachers Association joined Daniels during the press conference.
