China Can Withstand Our Tariffs
Much news has been made about Trump’s tariffs, and how a tit for tat tariff war could hurt the American economy. Canada and Mexico have been making some concessions delaying their tariffs, but China appears to not be backing down. Dr Matt Will joined Tony to talk about the tariff-trade war with China, and what it will mean to us, the American consumer.
Tony Katz:
Trump and tariffs, and specifically tariffs on China. The ones on Canada have not come to fruition yet, who knows if they will. The ones on Mexico have not come to fruition yet, who knows if they will on China. They exist and China is engaged in retaliation as well and for China. The market of the US is only part of their market. Mexico and Canada, the US is their market. So, the tariffs have a different effect. What are you seeing regarding the tariffs on China? Do you want more? Do you want less? Is there a different tactic? How do you think this is playing out?
I saw a headline this morning that I thought was fantastic, said Trump’s tariffs on China, creating chaos in China. Yeah, I think that’s exactly what he wants. He wants there to be chaos in China. And from an economic standpoint, I’ve talked about it many times, it’s a bad idea. From a political or a tactic standpoint that’s above my pay grade, I don’t know. I defer to you on that, But I can tell you he’s creating chaos. I mean, first he puts the 10%. Remember, we’re only 14% of their economy, only 14% of their exports. We’re not that big of a deal to them. So, they can dismiss us, or they can retaliate. We’re bigger, but I think they have more, maybe more tolerance for pain than we do.
