INDIANAPOLIS – Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced Monday that Devin Powell has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for his role in the murder of Anthony Garland, a Lyft driver. Powell pled guilty to the murder last December.
The shooting happened June 30, 2022 around 6 in the morning. That’s when IMPD officers were sent to the 3000 block of Waterfront Parkway W. Drive to help the Fire Department. That’s where firefighters told officers they found a person down after a run nearby.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office then arrived on scene and determined that Garland had been shot six times.
Investigators obtained a warrant for records from Lyft. They noticed that the last account that called for a ride from Garland was Powell. Detectives were able to find Garland’s car and initiated a traffic stop in Merrillville, Indiana.
Powell admitting to shooting Garland in an interview with police. He also said after the shooting, he cleaned up and changed his clothes. He also admitted to buying seat covers to cover up blood stains and vacuumed up the shell casings.
Detectives then obtained and executed a search warrant for Powell’s apartment and the vehicle. A firearm matching bullets recovered from Garland’s body was found in the vehicle when Powell was arrested, and detectives discovered a gun box matching the gun found in the vehicle with purchase receipt.
“Mr. Garland was a young father and husband, simply trying to take care for his family,” stated Prosecutor Mears. “Mr. Garland was also a youth sports coach, and his loss has been felt many in his community. We are grateful to have secured justice and hope this resolution provides some solace to Mr. Garland’s family, friends, and all who cared for him.”
