Arctic Blast Holds On, Slight Warm-Up Arrives Wednesday

INDIANAPOLIS — Bitter cold sticks around today, but a slight “warm-up” is coming Wednesday. The National Weather Service says subzero temperatures will continue due to a trough over the U.S., pulling Arctic air south.
“Today not only is it going to be cold, it’s going to be a little breezy as well,” said Matt Eckhoff, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “We have a 10-15 mile per hour wind with gusts up to 20 miles per hour. Combined with those temperatures, you’ll get wind chills down to negative 10 to negative 20 degrees.”
Eckhoff warns that frostbite can set in within just 30 minutes in conditions like this.
“You’ll want to limit your time outdoors as much as possible,” he said. “You want to dress in multiple layers. Ideally, a thermal layer underneath, then a warm mid-layer, and your outer layer should be a puffy jacket or a coat. Don’t forget hats and gloves—anything to minimize exposure.”
A small warm-up is expected Wednesday as winds shift to the southwest, pushing temperatures into the 20s. There’s some snow in the forecast, but like Tuesday morning’s snow at the Indianapolis Airport, it’s not expected to stick.
“Maybe Thursday morning into Thursday afternoon,” Eckhoff added. “Nothing significant.”
