INDIANAPOLIS — Former congressional candidate Gabriel Whitley of Indianapolis is pleading guilty to charges of campaign finance fraud.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana says Whitley lied about raising hundreds of thousands of dollars before the May 2024 primary.

Whitley is said to have fabricated roughly $222,000 in campaign donations. Court documents say he lied about donations from 67 people that he reported to the Federal Election Commission. Three of those 67 people were completely made up by Whitley.

It happened on three occasions, according to those court documents.

In October 2023, he falsely claimed those 67 donors. In January 2024, Whitley again falsely reported contributions from individuals whose biographical details he fabricated. Finally, in April 2024, Whitley falsified a $100,000 loan to his campaign.

He will plead guilty to making false statements to the Federal Election Commission. Whitley will be sentenced on January 28th and faces up to five years in prison, a 250-thousand-dollar fine, and three years of probation.
