INDIANAPOLIS — A man was shot and killed by police in Indianapolis on Thursday.
It was in the Mount Jackson neighborhood on the near west side of the city. IMPD says they were called about a man firing gunshots into a home and that he was also armed with a machete. When officers got there they confronted the suspect.
“Officers responded and were in their marked patrol vehicles when at least two shots were fired in their direction,” said IMPD Assistant Chief Michael Wolley.
Officers held their fire as they ran after the man behind several houses in the area, all the while giving commands for him to put down the gun and machete he was holding. Soon after, the man charged at the officers and that’s when the officers opened fire hitting the man.
“While the male suspect was on the ground he continued reaching for one of the weapons despite the officers’ verbal commands,” Wolley said. “One of the officers fired another round.”
The man was killed.
“It’s hard to put into words how violence like this impacts communities and our police department,” said IMPD Chief Chris Bailey. “It’s been far too often over the past several years. No of our officers wake up and say they want to take a life, but unfortunately, they were put in a pretty bad situation today.”
Police later found out that the man had shot a woman who survived the shooting.
IMPD Internal Affairs is conducting a separate administrative investigation. The officers who fired their guns have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting investigation.
