Chilly Weather Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — It will stay cold today, with a strong wind making it feel like the teens. Highs will only reach the low to mid-20s, making it one of the coldest days of the year.

Forecasters say a large system from Canada is driving the cold air and snow to parts of the country.

“The cold air is due to a massive area of low pressure in Southern Ontario, and you just have this big trough, so you have winds wrapping around the low pressure,” explains Cody Moore of the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “We’re getting northwest winds here. In Buffalo, they’re getting southwest winds right off the lake, and that’s why they’re getting all of that snow.”

While the cold will stick around, temperatures will warm up as the week progresses, with highs reaching the 40s by Sunday.

“I don’t really see any extended periods of cold, at least over the next couple of weeks,” Moore adds. “It looks like we have that brief warm-up over the weekend, then another cooldown next week, followed by another warm-up.”

Moore also said it’s too early to predict the weather for Christmas but noted that December has started with temperatures well below average and more snowfall than usual.
