INDIANAPOLIS — A federal judge has put a lawsuit over Indiana’s new porn ID law on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court rules in a similar case.

Magistrate Judge Mario Garcia issued his ruling Wednesday. Garcia has paused actions in the case until the Supreme Court has ruled on a similar law from Texas. The court is set to hear oral arguments in the Texas case on Jan. 15, 2025.

Indiana’s law requires the operators of porn websites to verify that users in the state are at least 18 years of age. The General Assembly approved the bill earlier this year.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has argued for the Supreme Court to uphold both the Texas and Indiana versions of the statute.

For now, the law is in effect meaning that Hoosiers have to verify their age before looking at internet porn sites. this involves uploading some sort of ID to the website, such as your driver’s license.

Opponents of the law say this process is unconstitutional and also opens Hoosiers up to fraud or identity theft in having to upload sensitive information. The law says porn websites have to discard this information once an identity is verified, but PornHub has said it is impossible to do this and remain in compliance with the rest of the law.
