Indianapolis on Track for 200+ Homicides,

INDIANAPOLIS — This weekend was violent in Indianapolis, with 13 people shot, three stabbed, and two killed in separate incidents. FOP union President Rick Snyder says the city is on track to record more than 200 homicides this year.

“This is what I say to people in and outside of Indianapolis,” Snyder said. “The reason why it matters to you is because it’s your capital city, and as the capital city goes, so goes the rest of the state.”

Snyder says this is a community issue, and lawmakers need to do their part by creating laws that make it harder for repeat criminals to keep offending. He said the Fraternal Order of Police has introduced “Operation Firewall,” which includes no bail for gun crimes and tougher sentences for repeat offenders.

“I firmly believe that we have a chief of police in Chris Bailey who knows the strategy to get us where we need to be, but local politicians in Indianapolis need to un-handcuff our chief of police,” he said.

Snyder also wants a user fee charged to people who buy tickets for concerts and sporting events in Indianapolis. He says these events pull police officers away from neighborhoods that need protection, which he believes isn’t fair to Hoosier taxpayers.

“We propose that the state legislature, which is coming into session now, and this new administration under governor-elect Mike Braun, take assertive steps to place guardrails on the judiciary branch,” he added.
