INDIANAPOLIS — President-elect Donald Trump is going through the process of picking who he wants to serve on his cabinet as he prepares for be sworn back in as president in January.

In the early going Trump has picked Sen. Marco Rubio to be his Secretary of State. He has also nominated South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem to head up the Department of Homeland Security.

Both are solid picks, according to Sen. Todd Young (R-IN).

“You know I’ve served with both of them,” Young told WISH-TV. “Kristi Noem in the U.S. House and I’m good friends with Sen. Marco Rubio. I’m excited about their service and I’m looking forward to to supporting their service however I can.”

Rubio has served in the U.S. Senate from Florida since 2011. He and Trump were fierce rivals in 2016 as both ran for president, but have since become ardent allies.

Still, Rubio continues to hold staunch views on many foreign policy issues, especially when it comes to Cuba and Iran, but he also seeks to maintain international alliances that Trump remains skeptical of. NATO for instance.

“I know Rubio is a critical thinker,” Young said. “He’s an effective communicator and will tell the president and offer his private thoughts and council unvarnished.”

Noem was once a contender for the vice presidency on Trump’s ticket shortly after the primary. She has been an ardent supporter of mass deportations of illegal immigrants in the U.S.

Republicans are likely to have an easy road in confirming Trump’s cabinet picks. The GOP has already clinched the majority in the Senate for the second election in a row.

Trump has also tabbed Fox News host and U.S. Army veteran Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, Lee Zeldin to head up the EPA, Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations, and John Radcliffe to lead the CIA.
