NEW CASTLE, IND — On Thursday, Indiana’s Democrat candidate for Governor, Jennifer McCormick, introduced her Commonsense Cannabis Legalization Plan to legalize and regulate adult-use cannabis responsibly.

The plan starts with setting up a medical marijuana industry to create a foundation for transitioning to full adult-use legalization.

McCormick says, “Hoosiers have made it clear—they support adult-use cannabis and are frustrated by Indiana’s outdated prohibition laws. Our plan takes a commonsense approach by introducing a well-regulated medical marijuana industry.”

The plan involves creating the Indiana Cannabis Commission to oversee the legal cannabis industry, including regulation, licensing, and safety compliance. This independent body will ensure transparency and protect Hoosiers as the state moves toward full legalization.

Additionally, the plan proposes the immediate establishment of a regulated medical marijuana industry, which will provide access to cannabis for medical purposes. This step will help Indiana address potential challenges and learn from other states’ experiences before advancing to full adult-use legalization.

The plan also addresses the issue of unregulated hemp-derived THC products flooding Indiana’s gas stations and smoke shops. Regulating these products will protect consumers and ensure they meet safety standards.

Legalizing adult-use cannabis could generate an estimated $172 million annually in tax revenue for Indiana, offering a significant economic boost and funding for essential services.

McCormick added, “Indiana is an island of prohibition surrounded by states with legal cannabis industries.”
