MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — Donald Trump is officially the Republican party’s nominee for president.
In his first major speech since a failed assassination attempt, Trump described in detail the moment a shooter opened fire on him in Pennsylvania. He explained why he raised his fist after he was shot in the ear, claiming he wanted his supporters to know he was okay when he mouthed “Fight. Fight. Fight.”
The former president’s speech was noticeably softer and slower than usual as he called for an end to political division and urged Americans to unite. He also directly appealed to voters who didn’t support him in the past.
Trump laid out his plans if re-elected, claiming he will close the border and stop the invasion at the border, bring down inflation, and make the nation less energy dependent.
Trump says he’ll stop what he called the “invasion” at the southern border. While speaking at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Trump pledged to restore sovereign borders to the U.S. on day one of his administration if he’s re-elected. He plans to close the border and end the “catch and release” policy.
He went on to say the IRS is unfairly going after service industry workers. He again said if elected, he would end taxes on tips. He said this would help waiters, waitresses, cab drivers and others. Trump said this will help fuel the economy.
Trump also took some shots at President Biden, saying his administration has been a failure. Trump promised to bring down inflation and end what he called the “illegal immigration crisis” by closing the border. He also reiterated his claim that the wars in Ukraine and Gaza would have never happened under his watch.
Finally, Trump spoke about his assassination attempt for the first time since it happened. He said the assassin’s bullet came within a quarter of an inch of taking his life. He said he’ll tell you what happened, “and you’ll never hear it from me a second time, because it’s too painful to tell.” He said the assassin’s bullet felt hard when it grazed his right ear. He thanked the Secret Service agents and said he felt safe because he had God on his side.
