Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are adding a new merchant category for firearms retailers. The new merchant-category code will identify gun shops as specifically a “firearms retailer” as opposed to what they were formally categorized under, “durable-goods” or “specialty retailers.”

The International Organization for Standardization approved the new MCC Friday. The four digit code system will now separately categorize sales at gun and ammunition stores so they can “help track suspicious transactions.”

Tony Katz says this is another way the anti-gun movement is trying to pressure businesses into gun control.

“So, the idea is instead of being ‘general merchandise’ it’s now under a code. They want to be able to track all the purchases. And of course, the pressure will be on Visa and Mastercard not to accept that code-to limit the amount of purchases from that code-to keep people from buying. This is the desire…the objective is to keep firearms from being sold.”

The card networks say while they will implement the new code they will also  honor consumer privacy.
