INDIANAPOLIS — A gas station clerk has been charged with murder, for fatally shooting a shoplifter.

Court documents say Vincent Bibbs, 49, followed Damon McClain, also 49, outside a Speedway store — and shot him in the parking lot.

IMPD officers were dispatched to the speedway, at 4960 E. 56th St., on June 29. When police got there, they found McClain inside a car, shot in the head.

Surveillance footage from inside the Speedway showed McClain placing several cases of Red Bull into a plastic trash bag. He then left out the front door. Shortly after, Bibbs followed McClain outside.

Court documents say at first, Bibbs denied interacting with McClain. Bibbs added he never shot anyone, heard gunshots, or head a gun. Later, Bibbs admitted to police that he “messed up.” He told police that store management said not to let shoplifters leave the store. Bibbs said he tried to lock McClain in the store, but wasn’t able to.

According to Bibbs, a fight happened in the parking lot, and his gun went off. Bibbs then went back inside the store, waited on two customers, then called 911.

Bibbs faces an additional charge of carrying a handgun without a license. He is due back in court for a pretrial conference in September.
