Nimblewill. You might not be familiar with the word, but we guarantee you’ve seen this ugly grass in the yard. This warm-season perennial grass is a brown straw like patch of grass that appears around fall into late winter. You may be noticing it now!

So how do you get rid of those common spots? Pat says the key is to take care of it when it greens up. The problem is we tend to forget after it blends in with the lawn in early spring.

“It’s a grass that starts to green up right now. It’s a straw type grass that lays over. Here’s the thing, it’s stands out so much in late February and into March. But when it greens up, nobody generally notices it.”

Unfortunately, there is very limited ways to kill the invasive grass. The most effective, but costly, is a selective herbicide made specially for nimblewill, Tenacity.

“Tenacity is a concentrated product you’ll have to buy online. Once the nimblewill greens up you’ll want to spray it 2 or 3 times, 2 weeks apart. It’ll kill the nimblewill, but not your grass. Once you take away that competition, you’ll notice your desired grass will fill in.”

The product usually takes about 10 days to see results. Remember to only use when the weed is green, not when it’s dormant (aka brown and wiry.)

Note: There is a cheaper way, but it is more labor intensive. You can spot-treat with a non-selective herbicides with glyphosate, such as Round-UP. However, you will most likely need to reseed after the nimblewill has died, because it does kill any grass it touches- leaving bald spots in the yard.
