MUNCIE, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) confirmed that there are mosquitoes with the West Nile Virus (WNV) in Delaware County.

The Delaware County Health Department said on social media that the WNV is in Indiana and will most likely stay.

While most people infected with WNV won’t show symptoms, those who do can experience a range of reactions, from mild flu-like illnesses (fever, headache, body aches) to severe neurological conditions, such as encephalitis (brain inflammation) or meningitis (inflammation of the spinal cord). Individuals over 50 years old are at higher risk for serious illness or death.

WNV is typically found in birds and spread to humans through infected mosquitoes. Symptoms usually appear 3 to 15 days after a bite.

In 2025, the first human case of WNV was reported in Vanderburgh County, and 56 mosquito samples have tested positive statewide. While human cases in Indiana have generally remained low (11 in 2024, a slight increase from 2023), less severe cases are likely underreported.

To protect yourself and the community, the Delaware County Health Department advises eliminating mosquito breeding sites by removing standing water from areas such as gutters, flowerpots, and pool covers.
