The Indianapolis City County Council is looking to issue a city -wide curfew for young Hoosiers following the mass shooting downtown over the Fourth of July.

The proposal would make it unlawful for teens between 15 – 17 years old to be in public after 5pm on Friday/Saturday nights and after 9pm Sunday – Thursday. The curfew would also include minors 14 years and younger to be home before 9pm every day of the week.

City-county Councilor Leroy Robinson introduced the proposal stating that the curfews don’t have any penalties unless it is a reoccurring issue. He said then there could be penalties in the form of fines and parenting classes for people who commit multiple violations.

The Fraternal Order of Police Indianapolis President Rick Snyder joined the Hammer and Nigel Show to talk about how the proposed curfew is not nearly enough to help the city’s violence problem.

“We’re going to need bold leadership, accountability, and consequences for violent offenders. Guys, this proposal that was introduced last night is an unserious proposal. it’s a sophomoric response to a very serious problem.”

Snyder explains how the city can help and who is already doing the work in his conversation with Hammer and Nigel.
