Universal School Vouchers Approved in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — Starting in the 2026–27 school year, Indiana’s school voucher program will become universal, meaning most families—regardless of income—will qualify for help paying private school tuition.
Supporters of school choice say the goal is to give every child access to the learning environment that fits them best, whether that’s their neighborhood school, a public school in another district, a charter school, a private school, homeschooling, or virtual learning.
Right now in Indiana, families can already send their child to a public school outside their home district at no cost.
“We’re fortunate in Indiana to have so many school choice options,” said Betsy Wiley, President and CEO of the Institute for Quality Education. “But we also know it can be confusing for families to navigate.”
Wiley says the first step for families interested in private school is to pick the school they want. From there, staff at the school can help them apply for a voucher. She says there are plenty of tools available to help families explore their options.
“We’re really excited to see Indiana go universal in 2026–27,” she said.
