INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A woman has died following a shooting on downtown Indianapolis’s Massachusetts Avenue Thursday evening, an incident police are currently investigating as an accidental discharge of a firearm.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) East District officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Massachusetts Avenue around 5:06 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2025, after receiving a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers located an adult female victim inside a residence with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Medics pronounced her deceased at the scene.

Investigators believe the fatal shooting was the result of a firearm’s accidental discharge. Two individuals who were detained at the scene for questioning were later released after consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation, working with the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency to collect potential evidence. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will assist in determining the exact manner and cause of death, and will release the name of the deceased once proper next-of-kin notification has been made.

Authorities indicate that a negligence charge may be filed by the prosecutor’s office in the future as the investigation progresses. IMPD is urging anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward.
