INDIANAPOLIS — The former chief of the union for Indianapolis teachers has pleaded guilty to embezzling thousands of dollars from the union.

A news release from US Attorney Josh Minkler said Rhondalyn Cornett wrote checks, totaling around $100,000, from the Indianapolis Education Association’s bank account to herself. He added that she also used the union’s debit card for personal expenses and to take out cash.

Cornett resigned from her role with the union in November and was replaced by Ronald Swann. She resigned after being accused since 2013 of mismanaging finances and misappropriating members’ dues.

The Indiana State Teachers Association assumed control of IEA’s financial operations after learning of the financial mismanagement.

The U.S. attorney’s office says Cornett faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
