INDIANAPOLIS — You’ll be paying less for Thanksgiving this year.

A new survey from Indiana Farm Bureau says Hoosiers will be paying an average of $16.32 for a full turkey, or about a dollar per pound.

Isabella Chism, 2nd Vice President for Indiana Farm Bureau, says that’s down five dollars from the 2018 average.

“It’s interesting to note that even though wholesale prices are up, the retail price is down,” Chism said.

She says the reasoning is because stores are competing to get you through their doors, and they’re in a price war — which you benefit from — as they continue to lower their prices.

“We are, in Indiana, the fourth-largest producer of turkeys,” Chism said. “It gets competitive.”

The overall price for a Thanksgiving dinner is also down in 2019. The survey says the average cost for all of the items — turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls, peas, cranberries, milk, eggs, whipping cream, sugar, flour, and butter — is $42.66. That’s down ten percent from 2018.

“It amazes me that we would be able to feed anyone for under $5 per person,” Chism said.

For the survey, Indiana Farm Bureau has volunteers from all around the state go out and check the prices of those items at their local grocery store, and submit the prices to the agency.
