BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — All Greek life social events on Indiana University’s campus in Bloomington are on a pause until the end of the month, school officials say.

According to Andrew Golde, the president of IU’s Interfraternity Council, the pause on events will allow the IFC and Panhellenic Councils to “address reports of health and safety concerns within the community.”

Golde did not name any specific concerns, but says the pause will reflect the IU community’s “willingness to take accountability.”

“The safety of our members and guests is our utmost concern, and we will be taking appropriate action to ensure chapter compliance with updated risk management policies from both councils,” the statement said.

Social events will be on hold until March 24.

The announcement comes days after IU fraternity Beta Sigma Psi was ordered a cease and desist. The order, issued on Friday, suspends group activities “until further notice.” Online records from IU only provide “alcohol” and “endangering others” as reasons behind the order.

Mark Bode, executive director of public affairs at IU, previously told News 8 there is an ongoing investigation into Beta Sigma Psi. The cease and desist order is placed “when there are allegations of behavior that have caused or may cause harm to the members of the organization and/or the community,” Bode said.

One other fraternity is under cease and desist for hazing, while multiple Greek Life organizations at the university are on disciplinary statuses or have been suspended for dangerous behavior.

Greek life organizations at IU are no stranger to disciplinary action from the university. Since 2020, 25 fraternities and 8 sororities have been under some form of disciplinary action. That number represents 50% of all Greek life organizations on campus.
