INDIANAPOLIS — Whitestown council members are set to get a pay raise, but not as big as initially proposed.

At a Wednesday town council meeting, officials discussed a 200% salary increase, which would have tripled their annual pay from $4,800 to $14,400. After some pushback, the council moved forward with a more modest increase.

Resident Phillip Snoeberger, who ran for council last year, argued public service shouldn’t be about money and suggested a smaller increase would be more acceptable.

Council members agreed that pay adjustments were necessary to remain competitive with surrounding areas, especially as Whitestown’s population has grown by 255% since 2004. The new pay raises, set to take effect in 2025, will be lower than the original proposal.

Whitestown council members voted to raise their salaries by about 108%, bringing their pay to $10,000 next year.

Meanwhile, in Bloomington, the City Council approved a salary adjustment for council members, the mayor, and the city clerk during Wednesday’s meeting.

In a 7-1 vote, the council agreed to raise council members’ pay to $25,000. Clerk Nicole Bolden will earn $90,000, and Mayor Kerry Thompson will be paid $142,171.93.

The changes, which will take effect in 2025, will cost the city an additional $45,972.92, helping Bloomington stay competitive with other municipalities.
