NWS Talks Drought

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana has experienced several rainy days over the past couple of weeks, with many areas receiving over an inch of rain, bringing precipitation levels back to normal.

“We do have some drought still left, especially north and along I-70 through Northern Indiana, where a little bit less rain has been received,” said Aaron Updike with the National Weather Service.

Updike said that rain could begin on Sunday and last into the early part of next week.

“We are looking for the potential for a boundary to stall out near us for late Sunday into Monday and Tuesday,” Updike said. “And then a larger wave passage next Tuesday, and with that, there could be more rain. It’s too early to get into details on amounts, but we will get some rainfall this weekend.”

Indiana was historically dry from September into October, but Updike said the state received just enough precipitation by the end of October to compensate for the deficit.

“We happened to get enough rainfall on October 31st to push down into the record charts for monthly rainfall,” Updike said. “But it was on the drier end of the spectrum and warm, too. Early November, we were seeing some top 15 early November warmth.”

Updike added that forecasters expect winter weather to become more active in the coming week as the state heads into the early part of winter.

“It looks overall just a wetter winter and about normal for cold weather,” he said.
