MONON, Ind.–A person was shot and killed by an officer in Monon late Tuesday night. Monon is a northwest Indiana town in White County with a population of less than 2,000 people.

State Police say it started with a disturbance at a liquor store in Monon by a person who they believe was intoxicated at around 10:30 pm.

“Before deputies were able to arrive on scene, the subject had fled on foot,” said State Police Sergeant Jeremy Piers on Wednesday.

Piers says the suspect was found at a nearby home on State Road 16. That person had a knife.

“The suspect reportedly advanced towards the deputies at which point at least one deputy discharged a firearm striking the suspect,” said Piers.

After that, deputies requested EMS and began giving that person medical help. The suspect was taken to a hospital and later died.

“This is an active and ongoing investigation by the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division. Upon completion, the case will be submitted to the White County Prosecutor’s Office for review. No further details are available at this time,” said Piers.
