Using figures from the U.S. Small Business Administration, new research highlights the top five industries where small businesses in Indiana are thriving.

Construction
Leading the way is the Construction industry, with 65,402 businesses in 2023. These companies handle everything from building homes to large-scale engineering projects, like highways.

Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
In second place, this industry includes 59,822 businesses providing services like legal advice, accounting, engineering, and even veterinary care.

Transportation and Warehousing
This sector ranks third, with 54,552 small businesses. It covers transportation services for goods and people, along with warehousing and storage.

Retail Trade
Coming in fourth, Retail Trade boasts 53,100 businesses. These are shops and online retailers selling various products to the public.

Real Estate, Rental, and Leasing
With 52,654 businesses, this industry rounds out the top five. These companies rent, lease, or sell properties and offer related services.
While industries like Construction are booming, Accommodation and Food Services have the fewest businesses, with only 16,132 operating in 2023.
