BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A former athletic doctor at Indiana University is being investigated over claims of misconduct by a former IU basketball player.

Dr. Brad Bomba used to be IU basketball’s team doctor as well as the doctor for various other sports, and the anonymous player says he was subjected to unnecessary exams during annual physicals.

The former player, who was a student at IU several decades ago, claims he was given inappropriate prostate and rectal exams by Bomba. He said that Bomba’s exams affected other student-athletes as well.

Bomba is a former IU football player himself having graduated in 1957. He soon became the university’s top athletics physician and served as the team doctor for several IU teams for several decades until leaving that role in the late 1990s. He was also the team doctor for the 1984 USA Olympic Basketball team and also for Bloomington South High School.

Bomba was inducted into IU’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.

Indiana University said in a statement they have hired an independent international law firm to investigate the accusations being made by the player.

“In response to learning of the allegation, the university retained Jones Day, an international law firm with experience in sensitive and similar investigations, to conduct an independent review. The review will include witness interviews, a review of available documentation, and engagement with medical experts,” the statement reads.
