In the past, avoiding Gary, Indiana, was considered the key to staying safe in the state. However, the landscape of crime in Indiana has changed, and Gary is no longer the most dangerous place. In 2024, the title of Indiana’s most dangerous city belongs to South Bend.
South Bend tops the list with alarming crime statistics. The city has the highest violent crime rate in the state, with residents facing a 1 in 57 chance of being attacked. Property crimes are also prevalent.

Coming in second is Terre Haute. Despite its picturesque setting along the Wabash River and cultural attractions like Indiana State University, the city has the highest property crime rate in Indiana. Burglary, arson, and car theft are significant concerns.

Evansville ranks third, earning the nickname “Pickpocket City” due to its high rate of larceny. Evansville had 3,250 larceny cases in 2022. The city also struggles with violent crime.
Other cities on the list include Indianapolis, Hammond, Elkhart, and Michigan City, each grappling with high rates of both violent and property crimes. Even Gary, while no longer the most dangerous, still faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of its murder rate.
