VALPARAISO, Ind. — Valparaiso University on Tuesday announced it has adopted the Beacons as its new nickname, replacing the Crusaders.
The school said on Twitter that the new name “directly connects” to the school’s motto, “In Thy Light, We See Light,” and represents the entire Valparaiso University family.
Valparaiso announced in February it would retire the Crusaders nickname. The decision came after groups such as the Ku Klux Klan adopted words and symbols of the Crusades.
