SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Former South Bend Mayor and presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg spoke at the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee.

Buttigieg spoke in a video from South Bend where he reiterated a statement made by Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden from earlier in the campaign in which he said this election is “a contest for the soul of the nation.”

“Just over ten years ago I joined a military where firing me because of who I am wasn’t just possible, it was policy,” he said. Now, in 2020, it is unlawful in this country to fire someone because of who they are and who they love.”

Buttigieg said it was “political courage” that made his marriage to his husband possible and that he feels Joe Biden will take that political courage to the White House.

“I come to this convention proudly supporting Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” said Buttigieg. “Imagine what we could achieve, this coalition we’re building. Gathering progressives and moderates, independents, and even what I like to call future former Republicans.”

Joe Biden headlined the final night of the convention and said it is “time for ‘we the people’ to come together.” The former VP formally accepted his party’s nomination and vowed to be “ally of the light and not the darkness.”
