INDIANAPOLIS — The intersection of Illinois and Maryland Streets reopened Saturday evening after Citizens Energy crews completed repairing a more than 100-year-old sewer manhole structure that collapsed under the street on Thursday.

Citizens said Friday that the intersection would be closed until Monday, but the repair work was completed earlier than anticipated.

“We appreciate the community’s patience as our crews worked around the clock to complete the repair while ensuring public safety and continued utility service to the area,” said Jeffrey Harrison, President & CEO, Citizens Energy Group.

Thursday’s sewer collapse was the second such failure since the start of July.

As a result, Citizens Energy says it is conducting “rapid inspections of downtown sewer infrastructure” to identify potential issues.
