Pope Francis has been called upon to resign after a a prominent archbishop published a letter claiming the pope knew about the wrongdoing of Theodore McCarrick, the former cardinal of Washington who has been accused of sexually harassing adult seminarians and abusing a child over a period of years.

In the wake of the letter, Carlo Maria Viganò, the former representative of the Vatican in the United States, called on Pope Francis to resign, along with other cardinals and bishops who allegedly covered up McCarrick’s abuses.

WIBC host Tony Katz recently asked his listeners of faith how they continue to believe in light of the ongoing scandals in the church. Listeners responded that their faith is in Jesus Christ – not the church.

Katz:

“I’m Jewish; I’ve been Jewish my whole life… Never heard anybody say that before… in that way with almost a level of… not joy, but focus. And I thought that was a very interesting response, because it made me ask the question, ‘Well, then do you need the church?’ Right? And my understanding is, that’s the difference between the Catholic and the Protestant?

…So if that is the case – that for a Catholic it’s not about faith in the church, it’s about faith in Jesus… Very interesting take… Really and truly. It doesn’t solve a problem for me, and maybe I’m looking at it wrong – I don’t think I am. What do you do about the church?”
