President Donald Trump remains firm on his threat to close the southern border, after issuing a tweet last Friday that “if Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States throug (sic) our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week.”
Responding to criticism and questions regarding the legal justifications required for the administration to take actions on the President’s threat, Trump officials pointed to several statutes, including section 212(f) and 215(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, the same authority the administration used for the travel ban, as well as 19 USC 2, which allows the Customs and Border Protection agency to close any customs office or port of entry.
According to legal analysts, what ultimately matters is how the administration’s use of these statutes will hold up in court.
Meanwhile, and despite clear evidence to the contrary, democrats and immigration advocacy groups continue to insist that there is no real ‘crisis’ at the southern border.
