40% of Americans Stay Home on the Weekend

More Americans are choosing to chill at home on the weekends—and the data backs it up.
A recent study using location data from QR Code Generator shows the U.S. ranks third among countries where people stay home the most on weekends. And with high costs, it’s no surprise that staying in is becoming the new going out.
Here’s what the numbers say:
- 39.73% of Americans stay home on weekends
- That’s 2.45% more than on weekdays
- Most don’t go farther than 6.21 miles from home
- 48.44% stick within that short distance
- Only 8.9% go between 6.2 and 62 miles
- Just 2.5% travel over 62 miles
- Many say inflation, gas prices, and tight budgets make weekend plans harder to afford.
Even short outings—like brunch, concerts, or road trips—add up quickly. With high prices, a lot of people are choosing to skip the spending and stay put.
So, if your weekend plans involve the couch, a blanket, and maybe a streaming marathon—you’re not lazy. You’re budget-savvy.
Turns out, “doing nothing” might just be America’s new favorite (and most affordable) pastime.
