Five Killed after SUV Collides with Train in Gary

GARY, Ind. — Five people died Wednesday night when their SUV went around a lowered railroad crossing gate and was hit by a South Shore Line train, police said.
The crash happened just after 10 p.m. at U.S. Route 20 and Utah Street. When first responders arrived, they found the SUV badly damaged and the victims thrown from the vehicle. All five died at the scene.
Officials say the SUV tried to cross the tracks while the warning signals were active. No one on the train was hurt.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is working to identify the victims and contact their families.
Gary Police and transit police are handling the investigation. No other details have been shared.
