Wallethub Discusses Indiana and Mortgage Delinquency
Wallethub: Indiana Ranked Among Best States Where Mortgage Delinquency is Decreasing

STATEWIDE–Indiana is ranked in the Top 10 of “States Where Mortgage Delinquency is Decreasing the Most”, according to the personal financed website Wallethub.
This report highlights where homeowners are making the most progress in staying current on their mortgage payments from the fourth quarter of 2024 to the first quarter of 2025. Indiana ranks 9th.
“If you are delinquent on mortgage debt, you typically have until the debt is 30 days past-due (meaning you have missed two payments) in order to get current. After that, the lender will report the delinquency to the credit bureaus, which will damage your credit score. Therefore, it’s important to try to get current on your debt as quickly as possible. If you are experiencing financial difficulty that prevents you from paying, ask your lender if they will allow temporary forbearance until you get back on your feet, which may prevent you from being reported as delinquent,” said Chip Lupo, WalletHub Analyst
Montana was #1. Rhode Island came in last.
“Montana is the state where mortgage delinquency is decreasing the most. In Q1 2025, the number of delinquent mortgages in the state dropped by over 17% compared to Q4 2024, marking the largest decline in the country. Thanks to this significant improvement, Montana now boasts one of the lowest delinquency rates in the country slightly over 5%,” said the study.
