DETROIT — The United Auto Workers strike against General Motors is over.

The union and GM reached a four-year labor contract after a 40-day strike, which cost the company over $2 billion.

In exchange for bonuses and raises for the auto workers, the union agreed to not block GM’s plans to shut down four facilities across the U.S.

Those shutdowns will include three manufacturing plants and one distribution center. GM will also invest over $7 billion to existing plants.

Over 48,000 workers are expected to return to work as soon as possible, including those in Fort Wayne, Bedford, Kokomo and Marion.
