CAMPBELLSBURG, Ind. — A high school football coach from southern Indiana has died.

West Washington High School head football coach — and athletic director — Phillip Bowsman died Monday afternoon.

Bowsman suffered a stroke near the end of Friday night’s Class 1A semi-state championship against Indianapolis Lutheran, and was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indy.

The West Washington School Corporation said Bowsman had brain surgery on Saturday night to relieve pressure from swelling, but had complications.

On Monday, he was taken off a ventilator, and died at 1:19 p.m. He was an organ donor.

Classes at West Washington were canceled Monday and will be again on Tuesday.

According to a Facebook post by the school corporation, an honor walk is scheduled for Wednesday at St. Vincent Hospital. Bowsman’s funeral will be at Mt. Tabor Church in Salem on Saturday.

Bowsman was 43 years old.

Lutheran and Lafayette Central Catholic, the two teams that will play for the Class 1A State Championship on Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium, will wear special decals on their helmets to honor Coach Bowsman and the West Washington community.
